Soulja Boy Must Be So Upset Right Now...LOL

Six individuals were arrested Wednesday (November 14) for importing nearly $20 million worth of counterfeit urban clothing labels from China.

According to Reuters, federal authorities took down six people in New Jersey, California and New York, charging them with conspiring to import clothing with fake labels, and laundering the proceeds between 2003 and 2007.

Some of the brands counterfeited include Rocawear, Coogi and Evisu.

Of the men arrested, one was a man based in China who manufactured the clothing, and another in Los Angeles, a freight forwarder, who transported the illegal clothing to New York where it was sold to wholesale and retail customers.

The investigation was built, in part, from FBI confidential informants, who bought some of the fake clothing at cheap prices at stores in New York and intercepted telephone calls by some of the defendants conducted in Arabic and e-mails detailing the imports, according to the complaint unsealed in Manhattan federal court, reports Reuters.

Bergen Record -
Isiah Thomas and Stephon Marbury clearly were involved in an argument on a flight from New York to Phoenix, but the Bergen Record is reporting that it escalated to a physical confrontation.

One NBA player close to the situation said punches were eventually thrown -- a claim the Knicks denied -- and one person on the flight was heard describing the scene this way.

"Everything is Good in the Hood"

And the Winner is.....Jay Z Debuts at #1

Now I have to say that Sean Carter moved impressive numbers in the first week. Early reports stated that he was on track to move 180,000 units. Jay managed to move an impressive 425,000 copies in the first week.

I was shocked because there was way less hype for this particular album in comparison to last years Kingdom Come.

Nonetheless Jay delivers lyrically his perception of American Gangster.

American Dreamin' is my favorite track from the album.

Update on Kanye's Mom

Dr. Jan Adams, the doctor who performed Dr. Donda West's tummy tuck and breast reduction, is not certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and he's been arrested for several DUIs. They say it took Dr. Adams 8 hours to perform Kanye's mama surgery when it only should have taken 4, an early indication that something had gone horribly wrong. But instead of sending Donda West to a recovery center, Dr. Adams sent her home. And although 911 was called, they say Kanye's mama was dead by the time the paramedics arrived. Dr. Adams, who's made appearances on Oprah Winfrey and the Discovery Channel's "Plastic Surgery: Before and After", says Donda West may have died from heart attack, pulmonary embolism or massive vomiting but maintains he's done nothing wrong.

Wow of the Day!!!! Chuch not Church......

ATLANTA --An Atlanta megachurch took in $69 million in 2006, according to a financial statement the church's minister released in response to a Senate investigation into him and five other well-known televangelists.

The Rev. Creflo Dollar disclosed the World Changers Church International's financial information to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, but said the money he spends is his own.

Dollar said his income comes from personal investments, including businesses and real estate ventures. But the church gave him a Rolls Royce, which he mainly uses for special occasions, he said.

"Without a doubt, my life is not average," he said. "But I'd like to say, just because it is excessive doesn't necessarily mean it's wrong."

Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa, the top Republican on the Senate Finance Committee, launched an investigation into the finances of six ministers after hearing reports of some preachers' lavish and opulent lifestyles. In a letter last week, he requested answers by Dec. 6 to questions about their executive compensation and amenities, including use of fancy cars and private jets.

Besides Dollar, the letters were sent to faith healer Benny Hinn, Kenneth and Gloria Copeland of Texas, David and Joyce Meyer of Missouri, Randy and Paula White of Florida and Bishop Eddie Long of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Lithonia, Ga.

Dollar questioned the investigation's focus on religious groups. The minister is among the religious leaders who preach the "prosperity gospel," the teaching that God will shower faithful followers with material riches. But he said he uses only his personal finances to pay for his luxuries.

"My lifestyle does not come out of the church's bank account," he said.(Yeah Aight)!!

Baaaaaaaaalllllin In Harlem????

The New York Times -
Commissioner David Stern wants to put an N.B.A. Development League team in Harlem, U.S.A. The idea was jolting at first. Now it’s intriguing.

Harlem, Stern said Saturday, represents a caldron of basketball tradition that would give much-needed weight to the N.B.A.’s seven-year-old D-League, a place teams can send young talent to mature. “Harlem represents a basketball tradition that for decades and decades and decades has given the N.B.A. so many players,” Stern said in a telephone interview.

The most intriguing aspect of a team in Harlem is finding a place to play. Some have said the armory at 142nd Street and Fifth Avenue. But the only place to play is in the old Renaissance Casino and Ballroom on 138th Street and Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard. Some see the building as an eyesore.

Shawn Carter Is a Businessman and a Business...Man!!!

NEW YORK, Nov. 8 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Scion, LLC, a joint venture between Iconix Brand Group, Inc. and Shawn 'Jay-Z' Carter, today announced that it has acquired the brand Artful Dodger(R) from Sovereign State, LLC. The purchase price for the brand was approximately $15 million, paid in cash by Scion.

Artful Dodger is an exclusive, high-end apparel brand sold in boutiques and specialty stores such as Harvey Nichols in the UK and at specialty stores and boutiques in the United States.

In connection with this acquisition, Scion has entered into a multi-year exclusive license with Signature Apparel Group for Artful Dodger men's and women's sportswear. Scott Langton, Artful Dodger's founder, creative director and head designer will join Signature Apparel Group in this capacity.

In addition, Scion is currently evaluating a number of licensees beyond the core sportswear license including footwear and outerwear to transition Artful Dodger into a lifestyle brand.

Shawn 'Jay-Z' Carter stated, "Artful Dodger is an incredible brand with a lot of room for growth and Scott Langton is a visionary designer. They represent what's next and new in fashion and we are glad to have both the brand and Scott as a part of our family. Artful Dodger represents the first of many acquisitions that will begin to shape our joint venture with Iconix."

Scott Langton stated, "I consider myself very fortunate to have found a partner in Scion and am really excited about the future of Artful Dodger. I am looking forward to working with Signature Apparel, who as a company, has both the production infrastructure and financial capacity to make Artful Dodger the brand I always envisioned it to be. This union allows me and my team to focus purely on the designing of the collection and building on the success that we have already achieved in such a small period of time."

Neil Cole, Chairman and CEO, Iconix, stated, "Artful Dodger is the perfect deal to launch Scion as we look for brands that have the potential to become lifestyle brands. The combination of Scott's design talent and the marketing strengths of Jay Z and Iconix will create exciting growth opportunities for the brand including distribution at high-end department stores and expansion into new product categories. "

Artful Dodger is named for the 19th Century Artful Dodger who led a group of cunning young men in mischief throughout the UK.

About Scion

Scion, LLC, a brand management and licensing company is a joint venture between Iconix Brand Group, Inc. and Shawn 'Jay Z' Carter, to buy, create and develop brands across a broad spectrum of industries and consumer product categories.

How To Get A Record Deal - AllHipHop.Com Article

This is the question I am asked most frequently-- obviously by people who don't know me, because those who do know me ask me how they can sell more records on their own, not how can they get into a slave contract and become a sharecropper. But once again, for those who don't want to do for self, I will attempt to break it down from my vantage point.

I basically see three ways to get a deal in this industry; and let me preface this by saying that I AM talking about a rap record deal with a reputable record label that has a track record and that has experienced some success in the rap music industry through selling records. I'm NOT talking about the bogus labels that spring up daily all over the country with a business card printed last night at Kinko’s that says they are a record label.

Real legitimate record labels have a staff, they have proper financing to market and promote their releases after they record them, and they have experience and connections in the music industry with radio, retail, and promoters. The bogus labels should be avoided at all cost until they have a proven track record, as most of them can't even do as much for an artist as the artist can do for him or herself. And I'm certainly NOT talking about the labels or pseudo distributors that already exist within the industry yet can't seem to sell more than 30,000 records, even with a talented artist.

So, I see three ways to get a deal (that you'd want to have) in this industry:

1. Get put on by an established artist (but bear in mind that you may only be as successful as that artist. It's rare that someone puts you on and you blow up larger than they are). This means coming up under Busta Rhymes, Jay Z, Kanye, BG, Jeezy, T.I., 50 Cent, Nelly, Eminem, Dr Dre, etc. With any luck, the artist who puts you on is fair and doesn't do to you what was done to him when he was coming up.

2. Create a buzz. In a perfect world, you want everyone in the industry and on the streets talking about you before you get signed. Young Buck was a perfect example of an underground artist who had a very strong buzz when he was coming up. The trick is to keep it going til you get signed and then turn it up a notch so that the whole industry is buzzing about when you're going to drop (50 Cent is a great example of someone who kept up the buzz). This option usually takes many years to land a good deal.

3. Sell units. This is, of course, my favorite method because it proves to the labels you can sell, which reduces their risk and gives you negotiating leverage. Therefore, you have more control over the "fairness" of your deal, and often a choice of labels to sign with. In a perfect world, you want to be with a label that not only believes in you, but has an experienced hard-working staff in every department that can really make your project happen. Plus, a nice bidding war never hurts…

The average record deal for a new artist starts around $125,000 and 12 or 13 points (which really means 12 to 13 percent of the retail selling price after you pay back all the expenses) for an independent label or a subsidiary label, and $300,000 and 16 points at a major label. There are far more indie labels and sub-labels than there are major labels, so it is obviously more difficult to get signed directly to a major label. The plus of being directly with a major label is that there is no middleman. Dr Dre’s label Aftermath is directly with Interscope which is a major label. Eminem’s Shady Records is signed to Aftermath which is signed to Interscope. 50 Cent is signed to Shady via Aftermath at Interscope. That’s a lot of hands for money to pass through, even figuratively.

Most money spent to sign and promote an artist is recoupable. “Recoup” means paying back most of the expenses before you receive any back end payments (points are back end payments). I can count on one hand the number of rappers I know who've ever even seen a back end payment such as a royalty check. Most rappers make money by getting advances prior to working on the next release, always in an unrecouped position of owing money to their label.

The way to increase the figures in any deal, in favor of an artist, is for the label to realize that their risk is reduced. A label takes a risk when signing any new artist (risk meaning that the label could dump hundreds of thousands, or even millions, of dollars into an artist's career and the artist might only sell 10,000 records, which means the label loses a lot of money), but anything that can reduce that risk is considered a plus, and rewarded.

Decision 08' - Vote Obama

The Presidential primary election will take place on February 5th 2008. For those of you who do not know what the primary is; The primary is an election where we vote for a particular candidate to represent our political party. There can only be 1, so do your homework and see which candidate you feel can really represent your political party.

This is a Public Service Announcement From Hip-Hop star Common. Common says he will be voting for Barack Obama.

For those of you who didn't vote in the last election, here is your opportunity to redeem yourself and make a difference.

American Gangster #1

American Gangster is the number one movie at the box office, earning 46 million dollars despite the early leak of the film due to "Hollywood Racism".

For those of you who have seen the movie on bootleg and were amazed at how clear the movie was, that was because you were seeing an actual copy of the film.

It's not enought that "Hollywood" tries to give credit to other movies by printing a different title on the ticket that you purchased for "Why Did I Get Married" and other black Films, Now they have taken it to the next level by releasing original copies of our films in advance on the black market.

I commend those of you who support our films!

Remember to check your ticket after you purchase it.
